The Four Main Types of Brake Pad Materials
1. Non-Asbestos Organic (NAO):
· Composition: A blend of various fibers such as glass, rubber, Kevlar, and carbon, bound together by a high-temperature resin.

· Trade-offs: They can be noisier, cause more wear on rotors, and require higher pedal pressure in very cold weather. They also produce significant black dust that can stick to wheels.

3. Full Ceramic:
· Composition: Manufactured from dense ceramic material (similar to pottery) and embedded with copper fibers for heat dissipation.
· Characteristics: Ceramic pads are the premium choice for many modern vehicles, especially EVs and luxury cars. They are exceptionally quiet, produce very little light-colored dust that is easy to clean, and offer stable performance over a wide temperature range. They are also very easy on brake rotors.
· Trade-offs: They are typically the most expensive option and can be less effective at very low temperatures until warmed up. They are also more brittle and can be prone to cracking under extreme stress.
· Best For: Drivers seeking the quietest, cleanest operation and superior daily driving comfort.
4. Low-Metallic & Copper-Free NAO:
· Composition: An evolution of NAO pads, containing a small amount of steel or copper (or alternative materials like synthetic graphite to be copper-free) to improve heat dissipation and performance.
· Characteristics: They offer a good balance between the quietness of NAO pads and the high-temperature performance of semi-metallics.
· Trade-offs: They can be moderately noisy and produce more dust than ceramic pads.
· Best For: A performance-oriented daily driver where environmental considerations (copper-free) are important.
