Brembo Unveils Next-Gen Sustainable Ceramic Brake Pads For High-Performance EVs

Milan, Italy – October 26, 2024 – Global braking systems leader Brembo today announced the launch of its revolutionary "EcoCeramic Plus" line of brake pads, specifically engineered to meet the unique demands of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) while significantly reducing environmental impact. The launch underscores the accelerating shift in brake pad technology driven by electrification and sustainability imperatives.

The EcoCeramic Plus pads leverage a proprietary ceramic compound incorporating up to 35% recycled materials, including post-industrial ceramics and reclaimed copper fibers. This breakthrough addresses a key challenge in EV braking: particulate matter (PM) emissions from traditional pads remain a significant source of non-exhaust pollution, even as tailpipe emissions vanish. Brembo claims initial testing shows a remarkable 50% reduction in PM emissions compared to premium standard ceramic pads and a 65% reduction versus semi-metallic alternatives, without compromising performance.

"The transition to electric mobility isn't just about the powertrain; it demands a holistic rethinking of every component, including braking," stated Roberto Vavassori, Brembo's Chief R&D Officer, during the unveiling. "EcoCeramic Plus tackles two critical fronts: delivering the precise, low-noise braking expected in premium EVs and drastically cutting the environmental footprint throughout the pad's lifecycle – from sourcing to end-of-life particulates."

EVs present distinct challenges for brake pads. Regenerative braking handles most deceleration, meaning friction brakes are used less frequently but often more aggressively when needed. This leads to potential issues like corrosion and "glazing" (a hardened surface layer reducing friction) due to infrequent use, demanding pads that maintain consistent bite even after long dormant periods. Simultaneously, the near-silent operation of EVs makes brake noise more noticeable and undesirable. Brembo's new compound is engineered for exceptional consistency across a wide temperature range, high resistance to corrosion and glazing, and inherently low noise and vibration.

Furthermore, Brembo is integrating a subtle copper-free indicator layer. When the pad wears down, this layer becomes visible, signaling replacement time without the traditional screeching metal wear indicators – another nod to noise reduction. The company also announced a pilot take-back program in Europe to recycle used EcoCeramic Plus pads, aiming for a closed-loop material system.

Market Impact: The launch intensifies competition in the rapidly evolving EV-specific brake components market. Suppliers like Textar (TMD Friction), Akebono, and Ferodo (Federal-Mogul) have also introduced EV-optimized pads, but Brembo's strong emphasis on recycled content and quantified PM reduction sets a new benchmark. Analysts suggest this move pressures the entire supply chain to accelerate sustainable material development and lifecycle management strategies for friction products. Demand is expected to be strong from luxury and performance EV manufacturers seeking enhanced sustainability credentials and superior NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) characteristics.

Brembo plans to commence deliveries to select OEMs in Q1 2025, with aftermarket availability following later that year. The EcoCeramic Plus line represents a significant step towards cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable braking for the electric era.
