Dual Breakthroughs in Brake Pad Industry: All Samples Pass Qingdao Inspection, Eco-Friendly New Materials Accelerate Implementation

The "last line of defense" for driving safety is now under dual protection from quality supervision and technological innovation. Recently, the Qingdao Municipal Administration for Market Regulation released the inspection results of the second batch of industrial products in 2025, showing that all 30 batches of automotive brake linings covering both production and circulation sectors have passed the inspection. Meanwhile, breakthroughs in eco-friendly new materials such as R-PAEK resin and cardanol-based PBZ resin are driving the brake pad industry towards a high-quality development stage featuring "safety + environmental protection".

Solid Quality Defense: Zero Unqualified Products Across Production and Circulation

Behind the "full pass" in this Qingdao municipal-level inspection lies the precise supervision of key safety components by regulatory authorities. The inspection covered 6 administrative divisions including Jimo District and Shibei District, involving more than 20 enterprises such as Qingdao Haijinbo, Huangshan Feiying, and Dezhou Xinming. The products included mainstream specifications ranging from Φ310 to Φ320, as well as new categories like high-end ceramic carbon fiber brake pads. Professional testing by Qingdao Institute of Product Quality Inspection showed that all samples met the standards in core indicators such as friction coefficient stability and thermal fade resistance. Among them, TRW brand brake pads produced by Qingdao Temic Asia Pacific and disc brake pads from Qingdao Pal Brake performed particularly well.

"The full-chain qualification from production to circulation confirms the maturity of quality control systems in leading enterprises," noted an industry analyst. This is closely related to the industrial cluster advantages in East China. As a core national production and sales area for brake pads, Shandong Province has gathered leading enterprises such as Golden 麒麟 (Jinqilin) and Xinyi Auto Parts, which have established full-process quality control standards. In 2024, East China contributed 39.8% of the national brake pad sales volume.

Technological Revolution: Eco-Friendly New Materials Solve Industry Pain Points

While quality supervision is tightening, material innovation is reshaping the industry's technological landscape. The cardanol-based PBZ resin brake pads newly developed by the team from the Indian Institute of Technology have achieved a leap from "agricultural waste to high-performance components". The resin synthesized from cardol in cashew nut shell liquid increases the thermal decomposition temperature of brake pads to 425℃, improves thermal fade resistance by 94% compared with traditional products, reduces wear volume by 36% to 56%, and lowers noise peak by 4dB (A). More notably, this new material releases no formaldehyde during polymerization, eliminates the need for high-temperature post-curing, and shortens the production cycle by over 30%.

Another breakthrough comes from R-PAEK resin technology. As an eco-friendly alternative to phenolic resin, R-PAEK copper-free brake pads with a weight ratio of 4% maintain a stable friction coefficient in the full speed range of 50 to 100km/h. They also solve the problems of short storage life and high-temperature performance degradation of traditional products, and have passed full-scale dynamometer verification to be suitable for the high-frequency start-stop working conditions of new energy vehicles.

Market Upgrade: Hundred-Billion Aftermarket Calls for Standardized Development

Technological breakthroughs are responding to the structural changes in the market. Data shows that the scale of China's brake pad market reached 14.136 billion yuan in 2024, and is expected to increase to 14.56 billion yuan in 2025. Among them, ceramic brake pads have become the fastest-growing category with a market share of 38.7%, and the shipment volume of dedicated products for new energy vehicles has surged by 27.3% year-on-year. The huge market demand is supported by the stock of 430 million civilian vehicles in China. Calculated by replacing brake pads every two years per vehicle at a cost of 350 yuan per replacement, the potential scale of the aftermarket is nearly 75 billion yuan, far exceeding the current actual sales volume.

"Qualification is just the bottom line; technological upgrading is the way forward," said a relevant person in charge of Jinqilin Co., Ltd. The company's R&D investment accounted for 4.3% of its revenue in 2024, focusing on breakthroughs in low-noise formulas, and its product export ratio exceeded 60%. However, the industry still faces the challenge of homogeneous competition among small and medium-sized manufacturers. Thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises are concentrated in the mid-to-low-end market, resulting in an average industry gross profit margin of only 24%. With the approaching of Euro 7 emission regulations and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles exceeding 40%, products with environmental performance and system synergy capabilities will lead market integration.

Industry experts remind that consumers should pay attention to brake pad wear signals, such as brake noise and longer pedal travel, and prioritize brand products that have passed authoritative testing. The joint efforts of regulatory authorities and enterprises are making this "safety component" also an important carrier of green manufacturing.
