Brake Pad Industry Undergoes Structural Upgrade: Suzhou Quality Inspection Achieves 100% Pass Rate, Ceramic Materials Become New Energy Standard

Recently, the Suzhou Municipal Administration for Market Regulation in Jiangsu Province released the 2025 quality inspection report on automotive brake linings. The results showed that all 9 batches of products from enterprises including Nisshinbo Saelong and Kabhi Brake passed the inspection, with a 0% failure rate for samples from both manufacturers and physical auto parts stores. This outcome echoes the rapid growth of the ceramic brake pad market in the same period, marking the high-quality development stage of China's brake pad industry driven by dual impetus of quality control and technological upgrading.

Quality Supervision Fortifies Safety Foundation

This Suzhou municipal-level inspection covered two major channels: manufacturers and offline auto parts stores, involving multiple categories such as traditional metal brake pads and high-end ceramic brake pads. From the inspection results, local enterprises have fully met core safety indicators. Among them, products like the AK NS263H FF brake pads produced by Shuguang Brake (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. and high-end ceramic brake pads from Wuhu Zhidong Friction Material Co., Ltd. all passed key tests including friction coefficient stability and thermal fade resistance. Market supervision authorities stated that they will continue to strengthen the whole-chain supervision of brake pads, and cooperate with the revised version of the "Technical Specifications for Motor Vehicle Brake System Components" to be implemented in 2026, further compressing the living space for unqualified products.

Notably, potential safety hazards still exist in the international market. In April this year, BMW recalled 26 units of the 2025 X3 model in the United States due to potential brake failure caused by damaged front brake discs during transportation, requiring free replacement of brake disc and pad assemblies. Industry experts pointed out that this case highlights the importance of quality control in the supply chain, and domestic enterprises should learn from it to improve logistics and storage standards.

Ceramic Materials Lead Technological Innovation

Behind the quality improvement is the structural transformation of technical routes. Industry data shows that the market size of China's ceramic brake pads reached 4.8 billion yuan in 2024, is expected to increase to 5.6 billion yuan in 2025, and is projected to exceed 8.5 billion yuan by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.3%. This growth is mainly driven by the rapid penetration of new energy vehicles (NEVs) – NEV sales accounted for over 35% of total vehicle sales in China in 2024. Their high-load characteristics impose higher requirements on brake materials, and mid-to-high-end models such as NIO ET7 and Xpeng G9 have already made ceramic brake pads standard equipment.

The technical advantages of ceramic brake pads are particularly prominent in actual tests: the friction coefficient remains stable in the range of 0.35-0.45, the thermal fade rate at temperatures above 300℃ is less than 10%, and dust emissions are reduced by 60% compared with traditional semi-metallic brake pads. International giants are also accelerating their layout in this field. Brembo launched copper-free ceramic heavy-duty brake pads at the AAPEX 2025 exhibition, achieving an 18% improvement in braking performance and a 33% reduction in noise. Planned to enter the North American market in early 2026, these pads are compatible with heavy-duty models such as the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado.

New Energy Reshapes Market Pattern

The popularization of new energy vehicles is rewriting the supply and demand logic of the brake pad industry. Actual tests by Tesla Model 3 owners show that the service life of brake pads in electric vehicles equipped with regenerative braking systems can reach 155,000 kilometers, more than three times that of traditional fuel vehicles, significantly extending the after-sales replacement cycle. This change is driving the industry to transform from "high-frequency replacement" to "high-end supporting". The overall market size of China's brake pads is expected to reach 23 billion yuan in 2025, of which the proportion of new energy supporting will exceed 45%.

Facing market changes, local enterprises are accelerating the breakthrough of technical bottlenecks. Leading enterprises such as Xinyi Brake and Gold (Jinqilin) have achieved domestic substitution of ceramic brake pads, but high-end base materials such as silicon carbide fibers still rely on imports. Industry forecasts indicate that with the upgrading of intelligent manufacturing and breakthroughs in material technology, the per-vehicle supporting cost of ceramic brake pads will decrease by 20% by 2030, and the proportion in the after-sales market will increase from 38% to 45%. Industrial clusters in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta are forming a complete chain from raw materials to vehicle supporting. Central and western bases such as Chongqing and Chengdu are also accelerating their rise under the attraction of preferential tax policies, and the western production capacity is expected to account for 18% by 2027.

Industry Future Focuses on Three Core Directions

For consumers, the choice of brake pads should balance vehicle characteristics and usage scenarios: NEV owners can prioritize ceramic materials to improve durability; for heavy-duty vehicles, it is recommended to pay attention to heavy-duty specialized products from brands like Brembo; for daily commuter vehicles, consumers can choose cost-effective options with reference to Suzhou's qualified inspection list. Market supervision authorities remind that if brake noise, longer braking distance and other issues are found, feedback can be submitted through the complaint channel of China's Automobile Recall Network.

Industry analysts point out that 2025-2030 will be a critical transformation period for the brake pad industry. Technological R&D (integration of intelligent sensors), green production (copper-free technology), and global layout (Southeast Asian export market) will become the core of enterprise competition. With the upgrading of policy standards and the iteration of consumer demand, leading enterprises with core material R&D capabilities are expected to dominate the market pattern, promoting China's brake pad industry to move from "quality compliance" to "technological leadership".
